CollegeHumor explains Net Neutrality

I’m Adam.

-And I’m Emily.

We make “funny videos” on the Internet.

-But soon, we might not be able to.

That’s because…

…net neutrality is in jeopardy. Net Neutrality is the principle that says ISPs can’t discriminate between different types of traffic.

That means that…

…whether you’re a bedroom music producer, a couple on an amateur porn site, or just someone with a start up idea - you get access to the same users as Netflix, Facebook or Amazon. On the Internet, anyone can succeed.

…America’s ISPs wanna set up a pay-for-play system where rich companies pay extra to get to those users first.

If this happens…

…instead of a wonderful playground if innovation that it is now, the Internet will become like cable TV where you can only get stuff that’s been pre-approved by a bunch of old rich guys.

Ten years from now…

…your Internet bill could be a bigger “fustercluck” than your cable bill.

Now, you might be thinking…

…isn’t the government supposed to protect me from fragrant doucheholery like this?

…the former chairman of the FCC (government agency that’s SUPPOSED to protect you) is now the cable industry’s head lobbyist. And another former cable industry lobbyist is now the CURRENT head of the FCC.

…we can’t trust the FCC to make the right decision on their own. That’s why WE need to protect the Internet we love. The chaotic, AWESOME, often quite weird, place where literally everyone’s voice can be heard.

In a few months…

…the FCC will approve this festering soal of proposal unless we speak up. The Internet is one of the few places where human voices speak louder than money. So while that’s still the case, let’s use those voices. Go to DEARFCC.ORG and tell them to protect Net Neutrality. Thanks for doing your part to protect the Internet.

For small businesses like ours, who operate on sites like Etsy, Net Neutrality means we can reach customers from all over. If the ruling goes through, and we have pay-for-play type sites, or package deals like cable companies, websites like Etsy will be one of those specialty websites that a lot of people won’t want to pay extra for. Basically, our market will dwindle to nothing and our presence online will be the tiniest blip that you may or may not be able to find at all. And that’s not cool.

The Dark Lord and the Seamstress
by J.M. Frey
Illustrations by Jennifer Vendrig

Illustrated love story told in verse about the importance of looking beyond someone’s (poorly dressed) exterior and into their heart.

The goal: $5,000
The reason: to help fund and offset the book marketing, paying the creatives involved, and printing costs.

What is it?

The Dark Lord and the Seamstress is an unconventional love story told in verse. The finished product will be a picture book with a full colour cover, filled with beautiful black and white drawings illustrating a fun, romantic poem.

The book is suitable for kids, though it does have some dark humour.

some_textOriginal interior art, by Jennifer Vendrig

This book has been in development for twelve years! But now illustrator Jennifer Vendrig and I are ready to share the story – and her gorgeous artwork – with you and your family!

The Dark Lord, a brooding demon from the depths, is tired of being the butt of all the devils’ jokes for his outdated wardrobe. When he invites the world’s most famous Seamstress to Hell to make him some new threads, he doesn’t expect to be struck by love at first sight. Now he has to figure out how to convince her to marry him and stay and Hell forever… and the Seamstress has to try to figure out how to convince him that it’s a terrible idea!

It’s the perfect gift to bring into your geeky family, and is a lovely story about looking for the good heart beneath the (style-deficient) surface for people of all ages.

The Perks

Query and manuscript critiques, personal serenades, a ringtone recorded by Ed The Sock, custom etched glassware, poems printed on scarves, commissioned art, and a ‘tea’ party personally hosted by yours truly! Check out the perks list for everything!

The Stretch Perks

J.M. Frey has a new novel coming out, playfully hashtagged #EpicFeministFantasyNovel. If the campaign reaches $6,000, she will announce the name of the new novel and post the entirety of the first chapter online for free!

For every subsequent $1,000 we raise, then she will post another chapter. (Hey, that means if the stretch goals get to $40k, everyone will get the whole book for free! How cool is that?!)

Interested in helping out? Head over to the kickstarter page and check it out!

Have you backed this yet? You should! It’s a fantastic story. Help get this funded!
